Zoo Hosts Rhino Experts

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is proud to host the International Rhino Keeper’s Association (IRKA) workshop event from May 18-21, welcoming nearly 150 rhino experts, animal care professionals and conservation leaders from across the globe. This respected industry event reinforces the Zoo’s standing as a global leader in animal care, wellbeing and conservation.

“Hosting the IRKA annual event is an incredible opportunity to collaborate with fellow professionals who share a deep commitment to rhino wellbeing and conservation,” said Dr. Monica Stoops, director of reproductive sciences at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. “It’s also a reflection of our Zoo’s expertise, staff dedication and our broader role in protecting endangered species worldwide.”

The event not only promotes professional development but also strengthens the worldwide network of rhino caretakers who tirelessly support both ex situ and in situ conservation efforts. Attendees will engage in specialized training sessions, share research, discuss challenges and explore innovative solutions to optimize rhino care and advance the wellbeing of rhinos everywhere.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is home to two rhino species: the greater one-horned and white rhino. The Zoo actively participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plans. Further, the Zoo’s reproductive sciences team is advancing critical research to ensure sustainable rhino populations in human care, while generating data that supports conservation strategies for rhinos around the world.

By hosting the IRKA workshop event, Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium reinforces its commitment to global conservation and its leadership in fostering collaboration, innovation and excellence in animal care and species protection.
